How to Reduce Hearing Aid Irritation Safely

Quick answer: Most hearing aid irritation comes down to fit, trapped moisture, or dry canal skin. Check that the dome or earmold sits securely without pinching, dry the outer ear and the device after sweat or showers, and clean earwax off the hearing aid rather than out of your ear canal. Soothe dry skin with a gentle single oil such as mineral, coconut, or olive oil rather than peroxide or alcohol drops, and see a professional for pain, swelling, drainage, bleeding, or sudden hearing changes.

Mild discomfort can happen when you are new to hearing aids or have recently changed styles, domes, earmolds, or settings. But ongoing irritation is not something to simply push through. Your ears and your hearing aids both benefit from a calm, consistent routine that prevents friction and keeps moisture and earwax from building up.

Why hearing aids can irritate the ear

Hearing aids sit against sensitive skin for many hours at a time. Even a well-fitted device can become uncomfortable when sweat, moisture, earwax, dry skin, or pressure enters the picture.

For some people, the irritation is mainly at the outer ear, where an earmold, receiver wire, or behind-the-ear case rubs against the skin. For others, the concern is deeper in the ear canal, where a dome or custom mold can create friction or hold in warmth and humidity. Dry, flaky ear skin can make either situation feel worse.

Earwax matters too. A hearing aid may change the way wax naturally moves out of the ear canal. When wax collects around a dome, receiver, or mold, it can reduce sound quality and create a plugged or uncomfortable feeling. Trying to aggressively remove that wax with cotton swabs can lead to more irritation by pushing wax farther inward or scratching delicate skin.2

The goal is not to make the ear canal perfectly dry or completely wax-free. Healthy ears need a normal protective layer of skin oils and wax.1 The better approach is to reduce the things that disrupt that natural balance.

How to reduce hearing aid irritation with daily habits

A comfortable hearing aid routine is usually simple. It works best when you pay attention to small changes before they become an all-day problem.

Check the fit instead of forcing it

Your hearing aid should feel secure, but it should not pinch, create a pressure point, or cause sharp discomfort when you insert it. A device that shifts, squeaks, or repeatedly works its way out may also be creating friction in the same area of skin.

If you use domes, the size and style can make a noticeable difference. A dome that is too large may feel tight and rub the canal entrance, while one that is too small may move around and cause repeated contact. Custom earmolds can also need adjustment over time, especially after weight changes, dental work, or changes in the shape of the ear.

Do not trim, reshape, or force a hearing aid component at home. If a certain spot consistently hurts, make note of exactly where it occurs and ask your hearing care professional to assess the fit. A small adjustment can often make daily wear far more comfortable.

Keep hearing aids dry, but do not over-dry your ears

Moisture is one of the most common contributors to hearing aid discomfort. Sweat, humid weather, exercise, shower steam, and damp hair can leave the ear canal warm and moist. When a device is worn over that moisture for hours, the skin may feel itchy, tender, or irritated.

After exercise or time outdoors in heat, remove your hearing aids when appropriate and gently dry the outer ear with a clean, soft towel. Let the area air out before putting the devices back in. If your hair is wet after a shower, wait until it is fully dry before wearing hearing aids.

Your hearing aids need moisture care as well. Wipe them with a clean, dry cloth each evening and store them according to the manufacturer’s instructions. Many people find a hearing aid drying system useful, particularly in humid climates or if they perspire heavily. Drying the device helps prevent moisture from lingering near your skin, but it should not mean stripping the ear canal of its natural protective oils.

Clean wax from the device, not from deep inside your ear

Routine hearing aid cleaning is one of the most practical ways to prevent irritation. Earwax caught in a wax guard, dome, or earmold can affect sound and may lead you to reposition the device repeatedly, which adds friction.

Use the cleaning tools provided for your particular hearing aid and follow the instructions from your hearing professional or manufacturer. Clean the exterior, microphone openings, and wax guard area gently. Replace filters, guards, or domes on the recommended schedule.

For your ears, keep care conservative. Avoid inserting cotton swabs, fingernails, hairpins, or other objects into the ear canal.3 These habits can scratch the skin, pack wax inward, and make hearing aid wear more uncomfortable. If earwax seems to be blocking sound or making insertion difficult, it is reasonable to seek personalized guidance from a qualified ear-care professional.

Support dry, itchy ear skin carefully

Dry ear canals are a frequent reason hearing aids feel irritating, especially during colder weather, in dry indoor air, or after frequent water exposure. The skin may feel tight, flaky, or itchy, and the pressure of a dome or earmold can make that dryness more noticeable.

That said, frequent removal because a device is painful is a signal worth addressing. You should not have to choose between hearing well and being comfortable.

Avoid common irritation triggers

A few everyday habits can quietly make hearing aid irritation worse. Strong hair sprays, gels, fragrances, and skin-care products may leave residue around the ear or on hearing aid surfaces. Apply these products before inserting your hearing aids, and give them time to dry.

Be mindful of sunscreen and makeup around the ears as well. They are useful products, but thick residue can affect device openings and create a sticky surface that attracts debris. Clean the outer ear gently at the end of the day, then clean the hearing aid separately with the recommended dry method.

If you wear glasses, masks, hats, or helmets, check whether they are pressing the hearing aid against your ear. Behind-the-ear devices are particularly vulnerable to added pressure from glasses arms. A different glasses adjustment, mask style, or hearing aid retention option may reduce rubbing.

New tenderness that does not improve, recurring soreness in the same spot, swelling, bleeding, drainage, a sudden change in hearing, or pain that makes you stop wearing your device all deserve prompt professional attention.
